The origin of the name ios is not clearly established, and scientific opinions vary. Even before they settle on the island of the Ionians in the late second millennium BC Ios called Phiniki, and apparently got its name from the first inhabitants, the Phoenicians. Others connect the name to the Phoenician or Hebrew word "Ion" which means stone.
Another version attributes the name ios in the colonization of the Ionians, who found the right island, because of the natural harbor that has. The prevailing view in better today, says that in ancient times grew on the island many Ia (a usual herb of Geece), so I took them and the name of Ios or Nios as the corruption of the name. This generalized prevailed until today. The only time that the island has another name, was under Turkish rule, which was called "mean" or "Anza".
